Ingredients

Scale

Cracker Base

  • 40 saltine crackers (about 1 sleeve)

Toffee Topping

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar (light or dark)

Chocolate Topping

  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a rimmed baking sheet (approximately 10×15 inches) with parchment paper or aluminum foil for easy cleanup. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer, fitting them tightly together to cover the entire surface.
  2. Make the Toffee: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, stir in the brown sugar until fully combined. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring constantly. Allow it to boil for about 3 minutes without stirring to achieve that caramelized flavor and proper consistency.
  3. Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Immediately pour the hot toffee evenly over the arranged saltine crackers on the baking sheet. Use a spatula or the back of a spoon to spread it and ensure all crackers are coated.
  4. Bake the Base: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5 to 7 minutes. The toffee will bubble. Keep watch to avoid burning; the mixture should become bubbly and fully meld with the crackers.
  5. Add Chocolate Chips: Remove the pan from the oven and sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Allow them to sit for about 5 minutes so the chocolate softens and melts.
  6. Spread the Chocolate: Using a spatula or the back of a spoon, spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee layer until smooth.
  7. Cool and Set: Let the entire pan cool to room temperature, then place it in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to allow the candy to set and harden.
  8. Break and Serve: Once fully set, remove the candy from the pan by lifting the parchment or foil, then break it into pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or chilled for longer freshness.

Notes

  • You can substitute semi-sweet chocolate chips with milk, dark, or white chocolate chips to suit your taste.
  • Line the baking sheet with foil or parchment for easy cleanup and to prevent sticking.
  • Watch the toffee closely while baking to avoid burning, which can happen quickly.
  • For added flavor, sprinkle chopped nuts or sea salt on top of the chocolate before it hardens.
  • Store in an airtight container; this candy stays fresh for up to 2 weeks.
