Dry Ingredients
- 3 1/2 cups oats
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon flax seed (optional)
Wet Ingredients
- Mash the Bananas: In a large mixing bowl, thoroughly mash the 3 medium bananas until smooth and creamy to serve as the base of your dog treat dough.
- Prepare Oat Flour: Place 2 1/2 cups of the oats into a food processor and grind them until they reach a fine, flour-like texture. Transfer the ground oats into the mixing bowl with the mashed bananas.
- Mix Ingredients: Add the remaining 1 cup of whole oats, the 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon, and the optional 1 tablespoon of flax seed to the bowl. Combine the mixture well. Adjust the dough consistency by adding more oats if it’s too wet or a little banana, honey, or water if it’s too dry, ensuring the dough holds together but is not sticky.
- Preheat Oven & Prepare Surface: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly dust your rolling surface with flour or additional ground oats to prevent sticking.
- Roll and Cut Dough: Roll out the dough on the dusted surface to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters of your choice to cut out fun shapes, then place these on a baking sheet lined with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.
- Bake Treats: Bake the cut-out treats in the preheated oven at 350°F for 15 minutes. For crunchier treats, turn off the oven after baking and leave the cookies inside to sit for two more hours. To keep treats soft, remove them after 15 minutes and let cool at room temperature.
- Storage: Store soft treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Hard, crunchy treats can be stored at room temperature for up to 3 weeks.
Notes
- Adjust the dough consistency as needed to ensure it’s not too sticky or too dry for easy rolling and cutting.
- Flax seed is optional but adds extra nutrition and helps bind the dough.
- Always introduce new treats gradually into your dog’s diet to avoid stomach upset.
- Make sure to use ripe bananas for better sweetness and binding.
- Store treats properly to maintain freshness and avoid spoilage.
