Main Ingredients
- 40 Saltine crackers (about 1 sleeve)
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons cinnamon sugar
- Prepare the baking sheet: Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer, covering the entire sheet without overlapping.
- Make the toffee topping: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter and stir in the brown sugar. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture comes to a boil. Allow it to boil gently for 3-4 minutes, making sure it doesn’t burn to create a smooth toffee.
- Pour toffee over crackers: Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the arranged crackers on the baking sheet. Use a spatula to spread the toffee to cover all crackers thoroughly.
- Bake the cracker toffee: Place the baking sheet in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) and bake for 5-7 minutes until the toffee is bubbly and fully coated on the crackers.
- Sprinkle cinnamon sugar: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the cinnamon sugar evenly over the hot toffee.
- Cool and set: Allow the candy to cool completely at room temperature or in the refrigerator until the toffee hardens and the crackers are crisp. Break into pieces and serve.
Notes
- Use unsalted butter to control the saltiness and balance the sweetness.
- Line the baking sheet to make cleanup easier and to allow easy removal of the candy once set.
- Do not overbake to prevent the toffee from burning.
- Store leftover candy in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
- For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of sea salt over the cinnamon sugar before cooling.
