4.7 from 77 reviews

Classic Christmas Toffee is a rich and buttery treat perfect for holiday gatherings. This simple recipe combines caramelized butter and sugar poured over crunchy nuts, then topped with smooth melted chocolate for a festive, irresistible dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Toffee Base

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar

Toppings

  • 1 cup chopped nuts (such as almonds, pecans, or walnuts)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate

Instructions

  1. Prepare Toffee Base: In a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and sugar together, stirring constantly. Continue cooking until the mixture reaches a golden caramel color and a temperature of about 300°F (hard crack stage) on a candy thermometer, about 10-15 minutes.
  2. Pour Over Nuts: Remove the toffee from heat and immediately pour the hot mixture evenly over a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Sprinkle the chopped nuts evenly over the warm toffee to ensure they stick.
  3. Top with Chocolate: While the toffee is still warm, sprinkle the chocolate evenly on top. Let it sit for a few minutes, then spread the chocolate using an offset spatula until smooth and fully covering the nuts and toffee layer.
  4. Cool and Set: Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature until the chocolate is firm and the toffee is crisp. Break into pieces and serve or store in an airtight container.

Notes

  • Use a candy thermometer to accurately reach the hard crack stage for perfect toffee texture.
  • Choose your preferred nuts or mix varieties for different flavors and textures.
  • To speed up setting, refrigerate the toffee after spreading the chocolate.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks.
