Classic homemade biscuits are flaky, buttery, and perfect for breakfast or as a side to any meal. Made with simple ingredients like flour, butter, and milk, these biscuits come together quickly and bake to a golden, tender perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 3/4 cup milk (whole milk recommended)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) to ensure it’s hot and ready for baking the biscuits evenly.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir well to distribute the leavening agent and salt evenly.
  3. Cut in butter: Add the cold butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingertips to work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.
  4. Add milk and form dough: Gradually pour in the milk and stir gently with a fork until the dough just comes together. Avoid overmixing to keep biscuits tender.
  5. Knead dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently 5-6 times until it holds together. Pat the dough into a 3/4-inch thick rectangle.
  6. Cut biscuits: Using a floured biscuit cutter, press straight down into the dough to cut out biscuits. Avoid twisting the cutter to ensure biscuits rise evenly. Gather scraps and repeat to use all dough.
  7. Bake: Place biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet close together for soft sides or spaced apart for crisp sides. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
  8. Cool and serve: Remove biscuits from oven and allow to cool slightly before serving warm with butter, honey, or jam.

Notes

  • For flakier biscuits, use very cold butter and work quickly to prevent melting.
  • You can substitute milk with buttermilk for a tangier flavor and added tenderness.
  • Do not overmix the dough to avoid tough biscuits.
  • Biscuits are best eaten fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
