Slider Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, minced
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 12 sweet rolls
- 10 slices provolone cheese
- 14 ounces sliced deli roast beef
Topping and Sauce Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 & 1/2 tablespoons dried onion soup mix
- 1 packet au jus gravy mix
- 3 cups water
- Fresh chopped parsley for garnish (optional)
- Caramelize the onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and coat them in the butter. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 12-15 minutes until the onions are soft and browned but not burnt. Stir in the minced thyme, kosher salt, and black pepper. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the sliders.
- Prepare the rolls: Without separating the rolls, slice them horizontally with a large knife to separate the tops from the bottoms. Place the bottom halves, cut side up, in an 11×7-inch baking dish.
- Assemble the sliders: Layer half of the provolone cheese over the bottom rolls. Next, add the sliced deli roast beef, followed by a generous spread of the caramelized onions. Top with the remaining cheese slices, then place the roll tops over the cheese.
- Make the butter topping: In a small bowl, combine the melted butter and dried onion soup mix. Brush this mixture evenly over the tops of the rolls, or pour gently to cover them thoroughly.
- Bake the sliders: Loosely cover the baking dish with foil, avoiding contact with the roll tops. Bake for 25 minutes. Then remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 5 minutes to brown the tops.
- Prepare the au jus: While the sliders bake, prepare the au jus gravy mix according to the package instructions using 3 cups of water.
- Serve: Garnish the baked sliders with fresh chopped parsley if desired, and serve warm with the au jus on the side for dipping. Enjoy your flavorful French Dip Sliders!
Notes
- Use sweet rolls for a slightly sweet contrast to the savory roast beef and cheese.
- Be careful not to burn the onions while caramelizing for best flavor.
- Loosely covering the sliders with foil prevents the tops from burning while allowing even baking.
- The au jus gravy mix enhances the dipping experience but can be made from scratch if preferred.
- These sliders are great for parties and can be easily doubled or halved depending on the number of guests.
