Ingredients

Scale

Rice

  • 2 cups white rice
  • 2 1/2 cups water

Ground Beef Patties

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg (for binding)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Eggs

  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (for frying)

Gravy

  • 2 cups beef gravy (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce

Instructions

  1. Cook the Rice: Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Combine rice and water in a pot or rice cooker and cook until tender and fluffy, about 18-20 minutes on the stovetop or as per rice cooker instructions.
  2. Prepare and Cook Beef Patties: In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly and form into 4 evenly sized patties. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook patties about 4-5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.
  3. Fry the Eggs: In a separate non-stick pan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Crack eggs into the pan and fry until the whites are set but yolks remain runny or cooked to your preference. Season with a pinch of salt.
  4. Heat the Gravy: Warm beef gravy in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in soy sauce to enhance the flavor. Keep warm until ready to serve.
  5. Assemble the Loco Moco: Place a generous scoop of cooked rice in each bowl. Top each with a beef patty, then place a fried egg on top of the patties. Pour warm gravy liberally over the entire dish.

Notes

  • For a richer gravy, you can use homemade beef stock as a base.
  • Ground pork or a combination of beef and pork can be used for the patties for a different flavor.
  • Adjust soy sauce amounts to taste or substitute with tamari for gluten-free options.
  • Serve with macaroni salad or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
