This Homemade Chai Concentrate is a rich and flavorful blend of black tea infused with warming chai spices and sweetened with honey. Perfect for making chai lattes quickly at home by just adding hot milk or water.

Ingredients

Scale

Spice Blend

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 6 whole cardamom pods
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 1 tablespoon whole black peppercorns
  • 2-inch piece of fresh ginger, sliced
  • 1 star anise (optional)

Tea and Sweetener

  • 4 black tea bags or 4 tablespoons loose black tea
  • 2 tablespoons honey (adjust to taste)

Instructions

  1. Simmer the Spices: In a medium saucepan, combine the water, cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, cloves, black peppercorns, sliced ginger, and star anise. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat and let it simmer gently for 10-15 minutes to extract the flavors from the spices.
  2. Add Tea and Steep: Add the black tea bags or loose tea to the simmering spice water. Remove the saucepan from heat and let the tea steep with the spices for about 5 minutes, ensuring the tea is strong.
  3. Strain the Concentrate: Using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, strain the liquid into a clean container, discarding the spices and tea leaves.
  4. Sweeten with Honey: Stir in the honey while the chai concentrate is still warm, allowing it to dissolve fully. Adjust sweetness to your preference.
  5. Cool and Store: Allow the chai concentrate to cool completely before storing it in the refrigerator in an airtight container. It can be refrigerated for up to 1 week.
  6. Serve: To enjoy, mix equal parts of chai concentrate with hot milk or water, or adjust according to your taste. Serve warm or over ice for a refreshing iced chai latte.

Notes

  • You can customize the spice blend by adding or subtracting spices according to your preference.
  • For a vegan version, substitute honey with maple syrup or another plant-based sweetener.
  • Use filtered water for the best flavor.
  • The concentrate can also be used in iced chai recipes by mixing with cold milk and ice cubes.
  • If you prefer a stronger chai, increase the amount of tea or steep longer.
