Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 3/4 cup milk (whole or 2%)

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
  2. Cut in butter: Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the cold butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized bits of butter.
  3. Add milk and form dough: Pour the milk into the mixture and gently stir with a fork until the dough just comes together. Avoid overmixing to keep the biscuits tender.
  4. Knead the dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it 3-4 times to make it uniform, then pat into a 1-inch thick rectangle.
  5. Cut biscuits: Using a biscuit cutter or a glass, cut out biscuits and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Gather and reroll scraps to cut more biscuits.
  6. Bake: Bake the biscuits in a preheated oven at 425°F (220°C) for 12-15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
  7. Cool and serve: Allow biscuits to cool briefly on a rack before serving warm with butter, honey, or jam.

Notes

  • Keep butter cold to ensure flaky layers.
  • Do not overmix the dough to avoid tough biscuits.
  • Use buttermilk instead of milk for a tangier flavor and fluffier texture.
  • Baking powder should be fresh for best rise.
  • Baking sheet should be at room temperature before placing biscuit dough on it to encourage even baking.
